Topography
Gili Gede - is the largest adjacent island of Lombok Island. It has somehow been unknown to many travel agents; even local residents often do not know where it is. Yet it has several very interesting stories to tell & some speculative ancient myths from at least the 13th century. The likely-hood of these stories center around Gili Gede very protected prestine waters;: Many cruising sailors are not yet aware that the huge inside bay exists for two reasons. 1) That it looks like a point of land when sailing by and 2) The nautical charts mark the entrance full of obstructions, which is unfair as these are only "Pearl Buoys" and easily navigable, especially in the day time. |

The Inside bay with its clean clear water with scenic surroundings dropping down the hill sides to many excellent secluded beachs, "It is just beginning to be explored by tourists, the fishermans have known about it for a very long time. Lots of fish are exported from these nearby waters". There is a non volcanic evergreen mountain top gazebo that rests in the center of the island, a perfect place to stop for a rest on a hour Nature Walk. Enjoying both sunset and sunrise from the many beaches is one of the most romantic moments you may ever have. At least that is what some have said, who have had the pleasure. |

Aladdin Myth
On the other hand, this "Secret Island" has stories about pirate legends, where it is told that Aladdin passed by on his way to Arabia where he perhaps stopped by in the 15th century and wrote one of 1001 tales of Arabian Knights. These famous tales are said to have been written by several different people of several centuries.. There are a few Sheiks with the name Saladin/Saludin marked in history starting from the 15th century who likely traveled on to Arabian. Of course these stories are just local legends that could of occurred starting way back in the 13th century: Either way it makes for 'Sea Yales of Yonder Times' |
During the 12th to the 13th centuries; tall 200ft wooden ships from China roamed the Indian, China & Arabian seas long before the Dutch, Portuguese & English colonial era. These great ships were burned by the North Chinese Emperor in the 14th century after conquering the South. If you look closely and feel the mystic rumble here; you just may hear Aladdin spirit laughing and reciting Sufi poetry with the famous Chinese Admiral "Sao Bao" who sailed to Arabia. Around the same time a famous rebellious Sufi Islamic Poet fled from Persia possibly bringing this story to Lombok's Perfect Sailing Ship Safe harbor now known as "Gili Gede".
Sufi MythThe locals speak of a Sufi 13th century poet named Runi; he is said to have lived and died here and left ancestors that are still surviving & thriving in the mystical waters. However you take these tales, it all adds up to a warm mystery that now attracts many world class sailors and tourists to Gili Gede. The snorkeling, kayaking and night fishing aboard the 6 meter winged Run About, are excellent. There is presently a new sailing trimaran 4M kayak, 3 double kayaks and assorted snorkeling gear. Dive excursions are available from a nearby dive shop. Plus the Nature Walk, Shell beach combing, "Escapee Oyster" picking. Most important for "Cruising Yachts" - There are Hot showers available for nominal charges. And our special again our Treasure Chest Hot tub for the daring Poet or Pirate spirited sailor. |
